How to Make Rubber Mulch?

Rubber mulch is made from recycled tires and other rubber materials. It is a popular alternative to wood coverings used in playgrounds. The reason for this is its physical properties, such as durability and relative safety. In addition to playgrounds, it is often used in gardens and courtyards because of its superior advantages over wood mulch, such as preventing weed growth and soil erosion, reducing fungi, etc.

The Process of Making Rubber Mulch

Step 1: Collect used tires
Rubber mulch is made by recycling old rubber tires. Almost all kinds of rubber tires can be used to make rubber mulch, from small tires for toys to large tires for trucks. It keeps tires out of landfills and gives them a second life as mulch.

Step 2: Remove the steel strip from them
Before rubber mulch manufacturers can turn old tires into mulch, they need to remove the steel bands that sit inside the tires. These manufacturers often rely on magnet systems to ensure that no steel remains in the tires. This makes mulch as safe as possible.

Step 3: The tires are shredded and colored
Once the steel bands are removed from the tires, the tires are shredded by a tire shredder into small pieces of mulch. They are also painted to give them a finished appearance. Black is the most common color for rubber mulch, but manufacturers can make mulch almost any color they want.

Step 4: Rubber mulch is packaged
After the rubber mulch is all made, it is packed into large bags so that it can be shipped to people who want to use it.

Benefits of Recycled Rubber Mulch

In addition to its obvious safety benefits, rubber can be used in a wide variety of projects, from construction to large-scale landscape projects. Other benefits of rubber mulch include:

  • The overall cost is low. While rubber mulch has higher upfront costs, it is cheaper in the long run because it does not degrade like wood mulch or other natural alternatives.
  • Since rubber mulch does not absorb water as well as wood mulch, the surface covered with rubber mulch retains more water because water and fertilizer can reach the soil below.
  • Insects, pests and unwanted weeds find it difficult to take root in the rubber mulch.
  • Projects installed with rubber mulch can last more than 20 years and require less maintenance than wood.
  • Rubber mulch is mostly weather-proof and is known to withstand dangerous weather, such as blizzards, thunderstorms and even hurricanes.

Another obvious but sometimes overlooked aspect of rubber mulch is that it is made from recycled tyres. Recycled rubber mulch is helping to reduce our global carbon footprint by recycling products once burned in landfills or in dangerous tire fires into a safe resource available to towns and cities.

Is shredded tire mulch safe?

Tire mulch have been controversial in the past because of concerns that long-term exposure to products made from tires could harm children, pets and the ground. To date, however, no studies have shown that rubber coverings pose a toxic hazard. Rubber mulch are known to be perfectly safe.
